Get Captions App is an application that generates captions and subtitles from video and audio files you choose on your device. The app is designed with privacy in mind and does not require user accounts or authentication.
Converting speech into text is the one step the app cannot perform on your device: the audio of the file you choose is sent to a speech recognition provider. Section 4 explains exactly what that involves, what is sent, and how you control it.
We operate no servers that receive your content, and we do not collect identifiers such as email addresses, user IDs, or device-linked profiles. The app does not require you to create an account.
There is one exception, and it is the core of how the app works: to produce captions, the audio track of a file you select is transmitted to our speech recognition provider. A voice recording can constitute personal data under the GDPR, so we set this out plainly here rather than claiming the app transmits nothing. It is described in full in section 4.
The audio described in section 4 is used for a single purpose: producing the caption text and timings you asked for. It is not used for tracking, profiling, advertising, or training machine learning models.
We do not build user profiles, and we do not sell or share any information with data brokers.
When you select a file, the app extracts its audio track on your device. To convert speech into text, that audio is then sent over an encrypted connection to Microsoft Azure Speech Services, which returns the recognized text and its timings. This is the only time your content leaves your device, and it happens only for the file you explicitly choose to caption.
We do not operate servers of our own for this purpose, and we do not receive, store, or log your audio, your captions, or any record of the files you process. Microsoft acts as our processing provider. Azure Speech Services does not log audio or transcriptions by default, and the app does not enable the optional logging that would cause a copy to be kept, so your audio is not retained once the recognized text has been returned. Microsoft’s handling of the data is governed by its privacy documentation, available at privacy.microsoft.com.
All other processing — audio extraction, caption styling, burning captions into the video, adding overlays or background music, and exporting subtitle files — is performed entirely on your device.
The first time you open the app, a screen explains that audio is sent to Microsoft Azure Speech Services and asks you to agree before anything is sent. No audio leaves your device unless you agree. You can review or withdraw that agreement at any time from the Privacy screen inside the app; if you withdraw it, you will be asked again before any new captions can be generated.
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent as given on that first-launch screen (Art. 6(1)(a)) and on the necessity of the processing to deliver the captioning you requested (Art. 6(1)(b)). The audio is processed transiently to produce the result and is not retained once the captions have been returned.
The audio is processed by Microsoft Azure Speech Services in the East US region. As this is outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is covered by Microsoft’s Standard Contractual Clauses and its Data Protection Addendum.
Your media files, generated captions, subtitle files and exported videos are stored only on your device, in the app’s own storage. The app keeps a local history of captions you have generated so that re-opening the same file does not require processing it again. This history never leaves your device.
You can remove all of this data at any time by deleting the app from your device.
On launch, the app downloads a small configuration file from Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) containing settings such as usage limits and the minimum supported app version. This is a read-only request for settings. No personal data, media, or captions are sent to or stored in this service by the app.
Get Captions App does not display third-party advertising and contains no advertising or analytics SDKs. A limited set of features is available for free, with additional functionality available through optional subscription plans.
We do not share personal data with advertisers. Any purchases are processed by Apple in accordance with the App Store’s policies; we never see or store your payment details.
We hold no personal data on servers we control, which removes a large class of risk at the outset. The audio sent for recognition travels over an encrypted connection and is processed transiently rather than stored.
Standard platform security measures protect the app and the files it keeps in its own storage on your device.
The app is intended for a general audience and is not specifically directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
We hold no personal data about you on our own systems, so there is no account, profile, or archive for us to access, export, or delete. Data on your device is under your control and is removed when you delete the app.
Where the GDPR or a similar law applies, you retain the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and portability. Because the audio is processed transiently and not retained, there is in practice nothing held to which those rights can attach once a caption has been produced.
The right you can exercise directly, at any time, is the withdrawal of your consent (Art. 7(3)): open the Privacy screen in the app. Withdrawal does not affect processing that has already taken place. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the app indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
